Ceramic Piggy Bank

Seen in FBDO

Ferris’s piggy bank is seen a few times during shots that include a good look at the top of his bedroom dresser. For example, after he has finished talking on the telephone with the freshman at school, Ferris amuses himself by playing Johann Stauss’s “Blue Danube Waltz” using the sickly sounds programmed into his synthesizer. As he turns around to smile at the camera, the piggy bank can be seen to his left on the right side of his dresser (00:13:58).

Another decent look at the piggy bank comes at the end of the film (01:38:34) when Mr. and Mrs. Bueller close Ferris’s bedroom door.

Description

This piggy bank is made of ceramic chalkware and stands approximately 6” tall from its base to the top of its cap. No markings appear on the bank to indicate the manufacturing company or date; however, it is safe to say that the bank dates back to the mid-1900s.

Notes

  • A similar bank has also been produced measuring approximately 10” in height. Although the mold is very similar, the difference in size is noticeable enough to recognize that the bank on Ferris’s dresser is the smaller 6” variation.
  • Another bank -- a Kewpie chalkware bank -- can also be found on the top of Ferris's dresser.
