Description

The Overlords of War is a 1971 science fiction novel written by Gerard Klein which was originally published in French under the title Les Seigneurs de la Guerre. Klein's novel was translated into English by John Brunner and published in various formats throughout the 1970s.

The version of The Overlords of War seen in Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1973 hardbound Book Club Edition published by Doubleday & Company.

The full description inside the dust jacket (designed by Margo Herr) reads as follows:

Is there such a thing as the ultimate weapon? Can war be ended once and for all? Is the destruction of the universe necessary to achieve peace?

These are some of the chilling themes explored in this intriguing parable of tomorrow with striking relevance for today. It focuses on George Corson, an Earthman on a secret mission which, if it comes off, will bring victory to Earth in its long smoldering war with the bird-like inhabitants of the planet Uria. Central to the scheme is a wild pegasone, the most deadly beast in the known universe, that is just about to bear its horde of young which between them could quickly lay waste to an entire planet. But what Corson takes to be a strange accident transporting him 6,000 years into the future proves to be nothing of the kind, and he soon finds himself used as a pawn in a cosmic game played by beings as close to gods as any may dare imagine.

Originally published in France under the title Les Seigneurs de la Guerre, THE OVERLORDS OF WAR is a novel of powerful imagery and scope whose concept of war as a monstrous self-perpetuating parasite fattening off all intelligent life will arrest all who read it.

George Klein is a French consultant economist specializing in the area of personal savings. Several collections of his short stories have been published in France, and his articles on imagination and literature have appeared regularly in French magazines.

John Brunner is the author of nearly sixty books and well over a hundred short stories. He has received the British Fantasy Award, the British SF award (twice) and the "Hugo" for best SF novel of the year, and is held in considerable regard as a poet and topical songwriter. He is married and lives in London.
