Description

The official scorecard available at Wrigley Field at the time of filming was a four-page booklet-style document which measured approximately 8.5” x 11” when folded shut. The cover featured the image seen above – Chicago Cubs 2nd baseman, Ryne Sandberg, leaving the batter’s box. The cost was a mere thirty cents.

Opening the scorecard to the inside, the scoring grid was found on the left along with each team’s roster and the players’ positions and uniform numbers.

The opposite side of the open scorecard included a list of pitchers throughout all teams in Major League Baseball as well as advertisements for Chicago team sponsors such as WGN TV and radio, Old Style beer and Oscar Mayer.

Finally, while many associate Chicago baseball with Old Style beer, the back of the scorecard features a full-page color advertisement for Budweiser.

Notes

As a casual viewer watches Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, one might take notice of Sloane’s posture as Ferris and Cameron are enjoying their time at the ballpark. She appears bored. Maybe even tired or annoyed. But in reality, none of those are the case.

As can be seen in the full-screen version of FBDO, Sloane is concentrating as she details the game on a scorecard of her own!

Sloane’s love of baseball is further confirmed in Chapter 18 of the novelization of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off written by Todd Strasser:

Ferris sat down and looked at the ball. On his right, Cameron was eating nacho chips covered with synthetic cheese. On his left, Sloane was concentrating on the next pitch.

Cameron popped another nacho in his mouth and looked at the ball in Ferris’s hand. “See, if I had caught that ball,” he said through a mouthful of nachos, “with my luck, Mr. Rooney would probably be watching the game and nail me.”

“Cool out, you guys,” Sloane said. “The runner on second is going to steal third.”

Ferris and Cameron leaned forward to watch. Just as the pitcher started his windup, the runner on second sprang toward third. The throw from the catcher was high and the runner was safe.

Cameron sat back and stuffed another nacho into his mouth. “How did you know that was going to happen?” he asked Sloane.

“Simple,” Sloane said. “I am a student of the game.”
